Friday 22nd April, 2011 at 8.00 PM

Musicians:

Belinda Montgomery – soprano
Nicole Smeulders – alto
Stan Kornel – violin
Tim Willis – violin
Valmai Coggins – viola
Antony Albrecht – cello
Monika Kornel – harpsichord

Pergolesi’s beautifully sombre Stabat Mater - a setting for the Feast of Seven Dolours of the Blessed Virgin Mary - was most probably the composer’s last work. It was written for the aristocracy of the church of S Maria dei Sette Dolori in Naples.

The title of the sorrowful hymn is one of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, meditating on the suffering of the Virgin Mary during the crucifixion of her son, Jesus.

The string ensemble, together with exquisite voices, creates a divine sound for the utmost emotional 18th century music – Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

Please, join us on Good Friday - a very special day in the Christian diary - to share and celebrate this religious music.

As a much loved early music composer, the great Antonio Vivaldi certainly has his place in the pantheon of great baroque composers. The composer had a life-long association with the viola d’amore and his compositions are the earliest known concertos for the instrument. We are happy to announce that Fiona Ziegler, an esteemed violinist, will also perform a Vivaldi concerto for mandolin.

These concertos are rarely performed in Australia. Do not miss this unforgettable experience of Vivaldi’s concerti for viola d’amore!
